Medical Specialty Preferences Inventory (MSPI)

Upon first receiving my results, I must say that I was not surprised to see Emergency Medicine as my top preferred specialty. I have been passionate about pursuing EM for the last 3 years, so I almost expected this result. I will say that it was difficult to take the survey completely unbiased, so I would be interested to retake it again before beginning my second year of medical school.
I was slightly surprised to see that Pediatrics had a score of 0, since prior to deciding on EM, I was inclined towards choosing Peds. However, I think that after witnessing how difficult it is to treat pediatric patients in the ED, my outlook on becoming a pediatrician changed. I have more respect for the pediatricians who exhibit patience with the children and their parents, but for me, I don't think I am suited for that specialty anymore.

Physician Skills Inventory

(PSI)

Technical specialties include cytopathology, emergency medicine, general surgical pathology, interventional radiology, neurologist, pathology, psychiatry, radiation oncology, and radiology. (https://apps.aamc.org/cim-assessments/#/reports/SA

I was pleasantly surprised to see how well I scored in the Physician Skills Inventory. The results show that my dexterity, critical thinking, and communication skills are above the average of students going into a Technical Specialty. Though the only specialty I scored high on in the MSPI was for Emergency Medicine (and not Cytopathology, Gen-Surg, etc), I am satisfied with results. I did not take this survey with a bias in mind, but did my best to honestly answer each question. I'm thinking that this means that despite having some bias while taking the MSPI, my skills results provide evidence that I would be suited for a career in Emergency Medicine.

Physician Values in Practice Scale (PVIPS)

I am a planner. I am someone who, once I figure out what I want and need, I go after it with full determination. To me, pursuing Emergency Medicine allows me to accomplish my career goals while simultaneously fulfilling my values in practicing medicine. I am someone who strives for success and is ambitious. However, I deeply value my lifestyle and work-life balance. I eventually want to have a family and not only be able to provide for it, but also be present in it. I know that I do not want to pursue academic medicine, and that I put more value in using my skills to provide a service for patients.

I think that knowing what I want is an advantage in medicine, because it gives me clarity and guides me to choose the right opportunities and path to reach my goals. However, I am always open to change, growth, and innovation. Should my passion for EM metamorphosis into something else, I will do my best to stay true to my values and welcome the change into my life.
